(Reuters) – New York City police have apprehended a man on Sunday in connection with a shooting spree in Brooklyn and Queens. The suspect, riding an illegal scooter, allegedly randomly fired at multiple victims, killing an 87-year-old man and injuring three other men. Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attacks and any possible connections between the victims.
Assistant Chief Joseph Kenny of the New York City Police Department stated in a press conference, “Video shows he’s not targeting anybody, he’s not following anybody. As he’s driving on the scooter he’s randomly shooting.”
After the first incident, video footage of the suspect was quickly distributed to all police officers. Thanks to this effort, officers recognized the 25-year-old suspect riding on a main thoroughfare and made an arrest within two hours.
During the arrest, officers recovered a 9mm handgun with an extended magazine and additional ammunition, according to Assistant Chief Kenny.
The victim who tragically lost their life was identified as 87-year-old Hamod Ali Saeidi by a friend. Saeidi was known for walking several miles each day to visit family and friends.
The other victims include a 44-year-old man in critical condition after being shot in the cheek, a 63-year-old man in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his shoulder, and a 21-year-old man with a shoulder injury that was not as severe.
Furthermore, the suspect targeted a group of people but missed. At each crime scene, investigators found 9mm shell casings.
Although the police have not released the suspect’s identity, they mentioned he had one prior arrest on his record.
More information is yet to be unveiled as the authorities continue their investigation into this shocking incident. (Reporting by Daniel Trotta; Editing by Leslie Adler)
