PETALING JAYA: Anthony Loke has stated that Beruas MP Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham’s suggestion of having a non-Muslim legal expert on the special committee examining the functions of the Syariah Court was an oversight. Loke expressed that the National Islamic Council (MKI), led by the Sultan of Selangor, was formed to advise the council on strengthening the function of the Syariah Court. He further clarified that the establishment of the special committee was not decided by the Cabinet, but by MKI, to whom they report directly. This was mentioned by the DAP secretary-general in a statement on Friday (Dec 29).

The DAP secretary-general addressed concerns regarding Ngeh’s statement, stating that DAP respects the wisdom of Sultan Selangor in making any decision on the affairs of MKI. Loke added that amendments involving non-Muslims’ rights must be fine-tuned and decided by the Cabinet, and the process must be carried out in Parliament.
“The DAP is committed to the principle of mutual respect and harmony among races and religion, which is our responsibility,” stated Loke. He concluded by urging everyone to end 2023 with a harmonious spirit and contribute to the progress and wellbeing of 2024.
