The Niger military junta, which recently seized power, has claimed that the deposed government had granted France the authorization to launch strikes at the presidency in an attempt to free President Mohamed Bazoum. Army Colonel Amadou Abdramane, one of the coup plotters, made these remarks on state television. He stated that the authorization had been signed by Niger’s foreign minister, Hassoumi Massoudou, who was acting as the prime minister at the time. Massoudou has not been available for comment. France, the country’s former colonial ruler, has condemned the coup and called for the reinstatement of President Bazoum, but they have not announced any plans for military intervention.

The military junta, which took control after blocking President Bazoum inside his presidential palace, has previously issued warnings against foreign attempts to extract him, citing potential bloodshed and chaos as a result. The junta’s statement on state television raises questions about the level of collaboration between the toppled government and France regarding the military strikes. In response to the coup, France has joined other international bodies in denouncing the takeover and demanding the restoration of democratic governance in Niger.

The situation in Niger remains tense following the military seizure of power. The junta has yet to establish a clear roadmap for the country, leaving the future of Niger uncertain. However, their opposition to foreign intervention in their affairs suggests a desire for internal resolution and control over the political transition. The international community continues to closely monitor the situation, urging for a peaceful resolution and the return to democratic rule in Niger.

As the situation develops, the role of France and other foreign actors in the crisis will likely become clearer. In the meantime, the military junta maintains its hold on power, while political leaders, activists, and citizens within Niger and abroad advocate for a swift return to normalcy and a government elected through democratic means. The events in Niger serve as a reminder of the fragile nature of democracy and the challenges faced by countries in political transition.
