ABUJA, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) — The Nigerian government has restated its commitment to eradicating illiteracy in the country as Nigeria observed International Literacy Day 2023 on Friday.
During a news conference in Abuja, Minister of Education Tahir Mamman pledged to address the issue of illiteracy, with the theme of the day being “Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Laying the groundwork for sustainable and peaceful societies.”
Mamman emphasized the need to examine the changes in education worldwide, resulting from its expanding scope and paradigm. He stated, “We must make the necessary adjustments in our approach to literacy delivery to align with current global trends. The ministry will build upon existing progress in literacy development and promote lifelong learning for Nigerian adults and youths.”
He further highlighted the vital role of functional literacy in building resilience and ensuring quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all. The minister elaborated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration considers eliminating illiteracy in Nigeria a top priority.
Mamman affirmed the ministry’s determination to combat illiteracy, stating, “Illiteracy is a scourge and a disease, and we will not tolerate its persistence.”
