PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has announced that Bangladeshi opposition leader MA Quayum will not be deported yet because he has a pending court case. The Home Minister assured that the ministry is cooperating with all parties involved in the case.

Quayum was detained by the police earlier this month and handed over to the Immigration Department when his passport was cancelled. According to Saifuddin, there is a process to be followed before Quayum can be placed at the Immigration Depot, including informing him of his detention.

In addition to having his passport cancelled, Quayum was also informed that his Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) status was revoked. However, Saifuddin stated that the Immigration Department’s next course of action will depend on the court hearing scheduled for April 5.

The Immigration Department will adhere to and respect the court process, as Saifuddin reassured Quayum’s lawyer that they will not deport him pending the court’s decision.

“We are aware of the allegations that Quayum had been mistreated by the authorities, with some claiming that the Immigration Department had disrespected the courts by detaining him,” Saifuddin said at a press conference at the Home Ministry headquarters on Wednesday (Jan 31).

Specifically, Quayum will not be deported because of the pending court case. The immigration department will follow the court process and will not make any decisions until the court’s decision is made.

It is the Immigration Department’s priority to respect the court’s decision and adhere to the legal process. The allegations of mistreatment by the authorities will be addressed accordingly and the Immigration Department will ensure that Quayum’s rights are respected.
