KUALA LUMPUR: The issue of rationalising RON95 subsidies has not been raised, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said that the government is instead prioritising the public understanding of the diesel subsidies.

“The matter has not been discussed. We will deal with the issue of diesel first,” he told reporters during the National Tax Conference 2024 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on Monday (July 22).

Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said that various measures are being taken to boost government revenues, including prudent spending and borrowing when absolutely necessary for development purposes.

“Naturally, subsidy rationalisation is a comprehensive effort that covers a broader spectrum (to help reduce the government’s yearly borrowing).

“(Other efforts include) tackling corruption and (undertaking a) more efficient manner of enforcing the law and taxation efforts,” noted Anwar.

“If we don’t do it, our revenues will not increase, but our debt will continue to rise,” said the Prime Minister.
