The Permanent Mission of North Korea to the United Nations has criticized the U.S. for its possession of nuclear weapons and called for the cessation of “sharing nuclear” or “strengthening extended deterrence,” according to state media KCNA.
In response to the AUKUS alliance and the Nuclear Consultative Group with South Korea, North Korea defended its nuclear weapons as a means of exercising its sovereignty.
The North Korean permanent mission to the UN Office and international organizations in Vienna stated, “Signatories to the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty) should not criticize the DPRK for its legitimate exercise of sovereignty, as it legally withdrew from the NPT 20 years ago.”
The DPRK, which stands for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, assured that its nuclear force poses no threat to nations that respect its sovereignty and security interests.
