According to North Korea’s official KCNA news agency, the Supreme People’s Assembly has voted to nullify all agreements signed with South Korea to promote economic cooperation. This decision comes as relations between the two Koreas continue to rapidly deteriorate.
The assembly, which formalizes policy dictated by the ruling Workers’ Party, also voted to eliminate laws governing economic ties with Seoul, including the special law on the operation of the Mount Kumgang tourism project.
The Mount Kumgang tourism project, which drew nearly 2 million South Korean visitors, symbolized an era of economic cooperation that started in the early 2000s during a period of engagement between the two Koreas.
Following the shooting and killing of a South Korean tourist by North Korean guards in a restricted zone, the project was suspended in 2008.
North Korea declared the South as an enemy at war and terminated a military agreement signed in 2018, aimed at de-escalating tension near the military border established under a truce ending the 1950-53 Korean War.
Additionally, KCNA reported that leader Kim Jong Un visited factories producing consumer goods and food, offering guidance on modernizing the facilities as part of implementing a new regional development policy.
