According to North Korean state media KCNA, a senior North Korean official leading a delegation met with his Vietnamese counterpart on Monday to discuss ways to enhance bilateral relations. The delegation, which recently met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and is set to visit Laos next, is part of Pyongyang’s efforts to increase its diplomatic engagement following COVID-19 lockdowns.

The meeting took place in Hanoi between Kim Song Nam, the director of the international department at North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, and Le Hoai Trung, the chairman of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Commission for External Relations. During the meeting, Kim mentioned North Korea’s ongoing “confrontational struggles” with the United States, while Trung expressed the Vietnamese ruling party’s commitment to strengthening traditional friendly relations between the two nations.

Both officials agreed to broaden and reinforce political ties, revitalize cooperation across various fields, and provide mutual support on the international stage, as reported by KCNA. In addition to the discussions in Vietnam, a separate economic delegation led by North Korea’s external economic relations minister Yun Jong Ho departed Pyongyang for Russia on Tuesday, according to KCNA.

These diplomatic efforts come at a time when North Korea is seeking to expand its relationships with other countries, especially in the aftermath of the pandemic. The meetings with Chinese and Vietnamese officials suggest a strategic approach by Pyongyang to diversify its diplomatic engagements and strengthen ties with key regional partners.

North Korea’s willingness to engage in discussions with Vietnam and Russia signals its interest in enhancing economic cooperation and political relations with countries beyond its usual allies.
