The state media KCNA reported that North Korea leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin exchanged letters on Thursday, pledging to strengthen their bilateral ties. The exchange of letters was in celebration of the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. This development occurred a month after Kim’s visit to Russia, during which military cooperation and the satellite program of North Korea were discussed, along with the situation in Ukraine.

In his letter, Kim expressed his satisfaction with the “candid, comprehensive” discussions that took place during his visit. He promised to further enhance the relationship between the two countries and wished Putin success in resisting Western pressure regarding Ukraine. Kim stated, “I hope that the Russian people, who have set out to build a strong nation, will always achieve only victory and glory in their struggle to protect the country’s sovereignty, dignity, security, and peace by crushing the imperialists’ persistent hegemonic policy and anti-Russia scheme to isolate and stifle it.”

Putin, in his response to Kim, considered their recent meeting as further evidence of the development of bilateral ties. He believed that implementing the agreements made during the meeting would contribute to expanding constructive cooperation between the two countries, improving the well-being of their peoples, and ensuring security and stability in the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia as a whole.

The visit of Kim to Russia has raised concerns in the United States, as it fears that a strengthened Moscow-Pyongyang axis could potentially bolster Russia’s military presence in Ukraine and provide banned missile technology to Kim. The U.S. has accused North Korea of supplying weapons to Russia for its war in Ukraine, including artillery shells, shoulder-fired rockets, and missiles.
