According to data published by Slovenia’s statistical office on Thursday, the number of Chinese tourist arrivals in Slovenia almost tripled the 2022 figure, reaching 34,767 in 2023. This number is 2.9 times as many as in 2022, with most arrivals occurring in September and October.
The total number of foreign tourists to Slovenia increased by 18.4 percent year-on-year to 4.7 million in 2023, with the majority coming from Germany, Italy, Austria, and Croatia. On the other hand, the number of domestic tourists fell by 20.6 percent, largely due to the decline in tourism boosted by tourist vouchers in 2021 and 2022 as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic impact.
Despite the decrease in domestic tourism, overall tourist numbers rose by 5.5 percent in 2023, making it “the most successful year” for tourism, as stated by the statistical office in their report on Thursday. Ljubljana, the capital city, alone recorded a 20.7-percent surge in tourist arrivals.
The number of overnight stays also increased by 2 percent from 2019, which was the previous best record for tourism in Slovenia.
