    Number of flood evacuees drops in three states

    KUALA LUMPUR: Kedah, Perlis, and Johor saw a drop in the number of flood evacuees as of 4 pm, while the number of victims in Perak remained unchanged from this morning.

    In KEDAH, Civil Defence Force (APM) deputy director Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain said the number of evacuees dropped to 3,474 persons from 1,113 families, compared to 3,503 from 1,141 families this morning.

    “The evacuees are housed at 24 relief centres in the districts of Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, and Pendang,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Oct 10).

    Kubang Pasu recorded the highest number of evacuees at 1,227 from 412 families at nine relief centres, followed by Kota Setar (1,260 from 392 families) at nine centres, Pokok Sena (517 people from 184 families) at four centres and Pendang (470 people from 125 families) at two centres.

    In PERLIS, the number of evacuees stands at 525 persons from 166 families, down from 773 from 245 families this morning.

    Perlis APM director Lt Col (PA) Mohd Izaimi Md Daud said in a statement that the affected areas were Kampung Tok Kandang, Kampung Bakau, and Kampung Belanga Pudak in Kangar, while Kampung Kubang Gajah and Kampung Banggol Sena in Arau.

    He added that the evacuees were being accommodated at four relief centres at SK Sena and Vocational College in Kangar, and SK Kubang Gajah and SK Arau in Arau.

    “Meanwhile, two relief centres, SK Bintong in Kangar and SK Guar Nangka in Arau, were closed at 2 pm and 10.30 am respectively,” he said.

    In JOHOR, the state Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said the number of evacuees decreased to 17 from three families from 111 (30 families) this morning, with all of them housed at SK Seri Bunut, Batu Pahat.

    “Three relief centres, namely SK Seri Anom and SK Parit Markom in Pontian and SK Sungai Linau in Kluang, have been closed,” he said in a statement, adding that the levels of Sungai Sembrong in Parit Batu 2 Sembrong, Batu Pahat, and Sungai Ayer Hitam in Kampung Paya Embun, Pontian, were reported to be at the alert points.

    Meanwhile, in PERAK, the state Disaster Management Committee Secretariat reported that the number of evacuees remained at 136 from 40 families at two relief centres.

    “A total of 71 people from 20 families are at SK Changkat Lobak, while 65 people from 20 families are at SK Parit Haji Aman, Bagan Serai,” it said. – Bernama
