PETALING JAYA: Cramps got in the way of Nur Aisyah Zubir’s bid to finish the women’s individual road race event in Trocadero on Sunday.

The 26-year-old got off the blocks as the first Malaysian woman road cyclist to race at the Olympics but the tough conditions got to her and she was dropped by the peloton in the second half of the race.

The 158 kilometres race, which started and ended at the Pont d’lena bridge in Paris, features cobbled sections, roughly 1,700 metres of climbing (combined) as well as tight and technical narrow sections towards the finish.

American Kristen Faulkner, a former rower, claimed the gold in a time of 3’59:23.

Holland’s former Olympic champion Marianne Vos claimed the silver after pipping Belgian favourite Lotte Kopecky to the finish.

Azizulhasni Awang and Mohd Shah Firdaus Sahrom will start their bid in track cycling when they compete in the sprint on Wednesday while Nur Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri will make her Olympic debut in keirin.
