The government of Malaysia has decided not to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, a decision that has been accepted by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM).
OCM, which is also in charge of the Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) of Malaysia, initially revealed that the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) had offered Kuala Lumpur the hosting rights and even recommended that the government accept the opportunity.
However, on Monday (March 18), OCM’s secretary-general Datuk Nazifuddin Najib stated that Malaysia could feasibly host the games, but OCM’s president Tan Sri Dr Norza Zakaria later released a statement expressing respect for the Cabinet’s decision.
“OCM, as the CGA of Malaysia, would like to thank the Malaysian government, particularly the Youth and Sports Ministry, for carefully considering the offer from the CGF,” said Norza.
“After evaluating the financial implications and all aspects of organizing the Games, we fully understand the government’s decision to prioritize the welfare of the people.”
