An odd-job worker has been given a six-year prison sentence by the Sessions Court after he admitted to raping an underage girl over five years ago.
The accused, 29, was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ jail and whipping.
On Thursday (Nov 9), judge Marutin Pagan ordered the sentence to begin from that day, following the guilty plea.
According to the charge sheet, the crime took place at the workers’ quarters of a sawmill in Tanjung Kunyit here at midnight on Jan 5, 2018.
At the time, the victim, who was in a relationship with the accused, was 14 years and five months old.
The incident only came to light in June of that year when the victim’s mother took her to a clinic for a check-up, suspecting that her daughter was pregnant.
A month later, the girl confessed to her mother that she had had sexual intercourse with the accused, and she was indeed expecting.
