(Reuters) – An ammunition depot in Dzhankoi, Crimea, was struck during a drone attack carried out by Ukraine on Monday. Russian air defense forces successfully intercepted or suppressed 11 drones in the area, according to a statement from a Russian-installed official.
Sergei Aksyonov, the Russian-appointed governor of the Crimean Peninsula, which was annexed by Moscow in 2014, confirmed that a residential building was also damaged in the attack.
It remains unclear whether the ammunition depot was directly hit by a drone or if the damage was caused by falling debris from the drones. The city of Dzhankoi is home to a Russian military air base, and Ukrainian officials have long accused the area of being transformed into Moscow’s largest military base in Crimea.
Aksyonov further announced on the Telegram messaging app that railway and road traffic in the vicinity had been temporarily suspended for safety reasons.
At the time of reporting, Reuters could not independently verify the claims of the drone attacks, and there has been no immediate response from Ukraine regarding the alleged incident.
It is worth noting that Ukraine rarely takes public responsibility for attacks within Russia or on Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine. However, they have recently expressed that targeting Russia’s military infrastructure supports Kyiv’s counteroffensive efforts.
