(Reuters) – Antoine Dupont believes that France is ready to make a mark in Rugby Sevens at the Olympics, with the potential to win a medal, possibly even gold. This belief comes after Les Bleus emerged victorious in the men’s competition at the Los Angeles Sevens.
Dupont, who made the decision to skip the Six Nations in order to focus on preparations for Paris 2024, played a vital role as a second-half substitute in the final match. He assisted Theo Forner in scoring France’s third try, leading the team to a 21-0 victory over Britain.
This triumph marks France’s first title in Rugby Sevens since 2005 and has fueled their ambition for Olympic success.
“I began this Olympic journey with the goal of winning a medal, specifically a gold one,” Dupont expressed. “I had faith in the team’s abilities, and Sunday’s performance showcased their potential to defeat any opponent.”
“We are a highly ambitious squad with our eyes set on securing that gold medal in the upcoming summer games. This is the ultimate objective for all of us,” he added.
Following the victory, Dupont will return to his rugby union club Toulouse before rejoining the Rugby Sevens squad for the series finals in Madrid scheduled for May.
France’s previous best result in Rugby Sevens at the Olympics was finishing in seventh place during the 2016 Rio Games.
