In Hungary near the Serbian border, a car carrying migrants collided with a truck, resulting in the death of one person and injuries sustained by eight individuals, including four children, as confirmed by authorities.
Renata Papp, the mayor of Asotthalom village where the accident took place, revealed on Facebook that the car driver, who was a smuggler, was rescued from the wreckage by another smuggler and swiftly taken away in another vehicle.
Jozsef Hanga, a spokesman for the ambulance, stated that three children suffered life-threatening injuries.
Recent police data has indicated an increase in the number of illegal migrant crossings on Hungary’s southern border with Serbia, with individuals using the route known as the Balkans route and often relying on smugglers to reach Slovakia or Austria.
Despite the steel fence erected by Prime Minister Viktor Orban following the 2015 migration crisis that struck Europe, migrants from the Middle East and Afghanistan continue to enter Hungary from Serbia.
