ATHENS, July 18 – Greek firefighters continue to combat two major wildfires near Dervenochoria, located 30 km northwest of Athens, and near the seaside resort of Loutraki, about 80 km southwest of the capital, officials said.
No injuries reported. The blazes have burned forested areas and forced the evacuation of six settlements, according to a statement from Fire Service spokesperson Vasilios Vathrakogiannis.
Greece expects assistance from two Italian and two French water-dropping aircraft to aid in firefighting efforts, Vathrakogiannis added.
The fire, which began on Monday in Dervenochoria, has spread several kilometers to the south on Tuesday, approaching Mandra, a western suburb of Athens, due to strong winds (measuring up to 7 on the Beaufort scale).
Difficult weather conditions are expected in the upcoming days, increasing the risk of further fires in Attica and other regions of Greece, warned Vathrakogiannis.
