In Chukai, the lights from the Petronas petroleum processing plant have earned the district the nickname “City of Lights.” The presence of this plant and other industries has transformed the economic landscape of the district, creating new job opportunities and generating downstream sectors like food and beverage, tourism, and transportation services.

Since the 1980s, the district has shifted from an agricultural and fisheries focus to becoming one of the most advanced economic centers in the state. The presence of these industries has also led to the development of the first shopping mall in Kemaman, making it a shopping destination for residents in nearby areas.

Local resident Raihan Tikah mentioned that when she first moved to Kemaman, it still had a lot of forested areas, but the economic growth and development resulted in the transformation of the district. Her husband, Jaafar Ismail, was able to secure a job in the oil and gas sector, highlighting the employment opportunities generated by these industries.

In addition to companies like Petronas, Shell, and ExxonMobil, large projects like the Kerteh Biopolymer Park have also positively impacted the economic landscape by creating new job opportunities for the people in Kemaman. Restaurant operator Maizun Ahmad cited the rapid development in Kemaman as her main reason for moving and starting her business in the district.

The industrial sector in Kemaman has also led to the establishment of over 40 coffee shops, with high demand from factory and oil and gas workers, according to coffee shop owner Muhammad Hafiz Yusof.

The traditional activity of fishing still contributes to the local economy, with over 500 active fishermen in Kemaman. However, there is concern that young people are more interested in other industries, which has led to a decrease in the number of young fishermen.

While the industrial development has created employment opportunities, there is disappointment that young people are often hired for low-level positions, with higher positions predominantly filled by foreigners. Residents expressed hope that the new Kemaman representative elected in the parliamentary by-election next month will focus on long-term socio-economic development of the district.

Voters in Kemaman will go to the polls soon to elect their new MP after the Terengganu Election Court nullified the victory of the previous MP. The Election Commission has set polling for the by-election on Dec 2, with nominations on Nov 18 and early voting on Nov 28. The expectation is for the new representative to ensure continued development and progress for Kemaman. – Bernama
