The Umno Secretary-General, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki (pic), has urged the opposition to play a constructive role within the democratic system of the country and refrain from manipulating sentiments regarding a government transition. He emphasized that such actions would not benefit the country and instead advised the opposition to allow the 19 parties constituting the Unity Government to work throughout their term before contesting the next general election. Dr Asyraf Wajdi stated that continuous disagreements and playing with government transition sentiments hold no positive meaning and hinder the country’s development. Such actions also raise doubts among potential investors due to concerns about political instability in the country. He expressed these views during a press conference held in Kuala Lumpur after officiating the ‘Mercu 2023’ Programme on Thursday (Sept 7).
According to Dr Asyraf Wajdi, the period of “fighting” and “bad-mouthing” between the government and opposition has ended once the general and state elections conclude. He further specified that the Unity Government has four years remaining in its term to govern and will prioritize the stability of the country. Dr Asyraf Wajdi expressed confidence that during this period, the Unity Government will effectively operate the government, focus on stability, boost the economy, and instill trust and confidence in investors.
In response to whether there is a need for government-opposition discussions to address the country’s political crisis, Dr Asyraf Wajdi stated that it is unnecessary. He emphasized that the opposition ought to play a role in implementing checks and balances for the government instead. He highlighted that during the establishment of the Unity Government ordered by the King, 19 parties agreed to participate, except for Perikatan Nasional, which remained steadfast in being the opposition.
