PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian government has announced a new subsidy initiative that will benefit over 56,000 students studying at public universities. Anthony Loke, the Transport Minister, revealed that the initiative will enable these students to fly between the peninsula and Sabah and Sarawak using a credit fund to purchase their tickets. This move comes as the government aims to ease the financial burden faced by students.
During a press conference held at the ministry’s headquarters on Wednesday, Loke stated that the Cabinet had given its agreement to implement the subsidy initiative. He further explained that the initiative is projected to have a cost implication of approximately RM16.8 million, offering much-needed relief to the students.
Under this newly introduced initiative, participating airlines will implement a credit shell method. Each eligible student will receive a digital voucher worth RM300, which can be redeemed to purchase flight tickets for domestic routes between the peninsula, Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan.
“We are committed to ensuring that our public university students have easier access to affordable flight options,” Loke emphasized. This initiative aims to make travel more accessible for students, enabling them to travel between different states without facing exorbitant expenses.
