Bersatu youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad Kamal has called for the Pardons Board to provide a detailed explanation of the considerations and decision-making process that led to the reduction of Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s sentence. He emphasized the importance of transparency in order to avoid speculation and confusion among the public. Wan Ahmad Fayshal also urged the Attorney-General and the Prime Minister to issue an explanation in their capacity as advisors.

However, he emphasized the need for all parties to respect the decision of the Pardons Board, as it was chaired by the former King. Wan Ahmad Fayshal emphasized, “All quarters must respect the decision of the Pardons Board which was chaired by the former Yang Dipertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Almarhum Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah, to reduce the sentence of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.”

He also expressed confusion and surprise regarding the decision, stating that Umno President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and deputy prime minister had given hope to the party’s grassroots that Najib would be freed. He also questioned how a foreign news outlet was able to obtain the confidential information prior to the official announcement.

The decision to reduce Najib’s jail sentence from 12 years to six, as announced by the Pardons Board, stated that he would be released on Aug 23, 2028, and the fine has been reduced to RM50mil from RM210mil. However, the statement also mentioned that if the fine is not paid, a year would be added to the jail term, extending the release date to Aug 23, 2029,” the Pardons Board secretariat said on Friday (Feb 2).
