KUALA TERENGGANU: In a recent development, PAS has decided not to appeal the election petition decision for the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat. This decision was confirmed by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang during a PAS central meeting happening at a hotel in Kuala Terengganu. Lawyer Wan Rohimi Wan Daud, who represented Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim, the PAS candidate for the seat in the last general election, made the announcement. He stated, “PAS is prepared to hold the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election simultaneously with the upcoming state elections on August 12.”

The Terengganu Election Court nullified the victory of PAS candidate Ahmad Amzad Hashim on June 27, following allegations of vote-buying. Judge Datuk Seri Mohd Firuz Jaffril ruled in favor of Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Mohd Zubir Embong, stating that corruption had occurred with the intention of influencing voters in the 15th General Election (GE15). The state Umno had filed a petition at the Kuala Terengganu High Court on January 3, seeking to annul the GE15 results for the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat under the Election Offences Act 1954. Among the allegations raised in the petition was that PAS had bribed voters by distributing financial aid from the state government through the i-Pencen, i-Belia, and i-Siswa initiatives between November 15 and 17, 2022, just days before GE15.

Ahmad Amzad emerged as the winner of the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat in GE15, securing a majority of 40,907 votes and defeating three other contenders, including Zubir. The decision not to appeal the election petition signifies PAS’ readiness to participate in the upcoming Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election. Stay tuned for further updates.
