President Javier Milei of Argentina paid a visit to Pope Francis at the Vatican, bringing pastries and gifts as he seeks to mend his relationship with the pontiff whom he had previously insulted. Milei, known for his right-wing libertarian views, had insulted Francis during his election campaign, calling him an “imbecile who defends social justice.” However, since taking office, Milei has changed his tune as he faces challenges in his home country.

In a recent interview, Milei referred to the pope as “the most important Argentine in history.” During his visit, Milei brought alfajores de dulce de leche pastries and a brand of lemon biscuits that the pope enjoys, according to presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni.

Argentina is currently experiencing a severe economic crisis, with inflation at over 200%. Milei, who is facing difficulties after a major reform package was rejected by parliament, met with the pope for approximately one hour, according to the Vatican.

Francis, who was previously the archbishop of Buenos Aires, has not visited his homeland since becoming pope in 2013, a decision that has caused some controversy in Argentina. However, he has indicated that he may visit the country later this year. A visit from the pope could help Milei garner support from his conservative Catholic base and advance his reform agenda.

During an interview over the weekend, Milei emphasized Francis’ moral leadership role in a majority-Catholic country like Argentina. However, Francis has made it clear that he does not wish to be exploited by Argentine politicians for their own agendas. In a statement on Friday, he criticized the prevalence of “radical individualism” in society, a viewpoint that may clash with Milei’s free-market beliefs.

Francis and Milei had a friendly exchange on Sunday after a canonization Mass at St Peter’s Basilica, where the first female Argentine saint, Maria Antonia de Paz y Figueroa, was canonized. The pope, who is 87 and has difficulty walking, greeted Milei from a wheelchair, remarking on the president’s haircut and jokingly approving of Milei’s cleaned-up appearance.
