KOTA KINABALU: A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Sessions Court in Kota Kinabalu for planting a cannabis tree in his room in Penampang.
The accused, 28-year-old Nicklen Jaccqres, was also ordered to receive seven strokes of the rotan by Judge Elsie Primus after being found guilty.
Jaccqres was convicted for possessing and planting a 44.7cm cannabis tree weighing 6.36g in a room at a house in Kampung Bahang on August 19, 2020, at 2.40pm.
He was charged in court on September 2, 2020, and initially pleaded guilty. However, on January 14, 2021, he changed his plea to not guilty.
He was charged under Section 6B (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a punishment of life imprisonment and a minimum of six strokes of the rotan upon conviction.
The defendant, who was unemployed at the time of his arrest, will begin serving his sentence from the date of his arrest.
