GEORGE TOWN: On Tuesday (Nov 14), the police in the Northeast District busted a drug trafficking syndicate in Jelutong and Gelugor, leading to the arrest of five men and a woman in three separate raids.

The Narcotics Crime Investigation Division team, acting under Ops Tapis, carried out the raids between 11.20am and 3.45pm. The suspects, aged between 21 to 42, were apprehended by the Northeast District police chief Supt V. Saravanan.

During the first raid at the Taman Sri Damai Jelutong apartment, three men and a woman were arrested, and a search of the unit uncovered two packets of heroin, one packet of syabu, and four Erimin 5 pills.

Further interrogation led to the arrest of two more syndicate members at a car park in the same location, where police discovered two packets of heroin weighing 228 grammes in a Honda Civic car.

Following the suspects’ directions, the police then raided a car park at the side of Persiaran Bukit Gambir 1, Gelugor, and found nine packets of heroin weighing 4.1kg hidden in a Perodua Kancil car.

Saravanan stated, “Based on our investigations, we believe the suspects used the cars to store the drugs before they are distributed to buyers,” during a media conference at the Northeast District Police Headquarters.

The drugs were intended for the local market, and the police are still attempting to identify the source of the supply, according to Saravanan.

Additionally, the police seized a Mercedes Benz, three motorcycles, jewelry, and RM6,050 cash, with the total seizure amounting to RM135,021.

Saravanan explained that five of the suspects tested positive for drugs and also have crime and drug-related records. The suspects have all been remanded for a week until Nov 21 to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.- Bernama
