Peru’s President Dina Boluarte is set to revamp her cabinet, according to Foreign Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea. Speculation is rife in local media that the prime minister may soon be leaving the government.
Gonzalez-Olaechea mentioned that the cabinet reshuffle is part of a broader “relaunch of the government’s general policy,” which was discussed during an event at the foreign ministry.
This comes in the wake of an audio clip circulating in local media over the weekend, allegedly featuring Prime Minister Alberto Otarola trying to influence government contracts inappropriately.
While Otarola has not directly addressed reports about his potential departure, he did take to social media on Sunday to deny engaging in any irregular contracting, and reasserted on Monday that he did not commit any illegal acts.
Under Peruvian law, if Otarola resigns, all 18 cabinet members would need to do the same.
Boluarte would then have the authority to either reinstate each minister or bring in new faces.
Last month, the president made changes to her cabinet by replacing four ministers, including those overseeing the economy and mining sectors, as Peru struggles to recover from a recession.
