A 36-year-old woman in Serdang was conned out of RM18,800 by a man who claimed to work for an oil company. Serdang OCPD Asst Comm A.A. Anbalagan revealed that the victim, who is a photographer, met the 44-year-old suspect on Twitter on June 21. The suspect posed as a businessman from an oil company in Sarawak. After two weeks of getting to know each other, they became romantically involved, and that’s when the suspect started requesting loans. The victim lent him a total of RM18,800 over 15 loans.
On September 29, the victim discovered discrepancies in the information on the suspect’s MyKad (identification document) after accidentally looking at it. Following an online search, she realized that the man had previously tricked other women using the same method. The victim immediately reported the incident to the police. The suspect was subsequently apprehended at their vacation destination in Cherating, Kuantan, on the same day at approximately 8.30pm. He was then handed over to the Serdang police for further investigation.
According to ACP Anbalagan, investigations revealed that the suspect targeted women on social media by presenting himself as a successful businessman before asking for financial assistance. He encouraged other victims of the suspect to come forward and lodge a police report.
