SUNGAI PETANI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that the government’s efforts to eliminate extreme poverty this year will benefit all races in the country, not just one particular race.

Although some parties accused him of protecting the interests of only one race, the Prime Minister made it clear that the Unity Government’s position is to protect the rights of all races as stated in the Federal Constitution.

“Don’t ask me about the allocation for Malays, Indians,” he stated during a gathering with the Indian community on July 15.

“I don’t care how much the amount is, if the names are certified, we will provide assistance. We will assist all those in extreme poverty.

“We will help all Malaysians, regardless of their race,” he added.

Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister K. Saraswathy and Sungai Petani Member of Parliament Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari were also present at the event.

The Prime Minister, who had a busy schedule in Kedah on Saturday, always opposed the narrow-minded racial sentiments of certain parties.

Anwar expressed his appreciation for the support from the Indian community and urged Indians in Kedah to support the Unity Government to ensure the success of planned development projects.

He also hoped that the Indian community, especially those living in estates, would be able to overcome poverty.

“I want to remind Indians in Kedah to make wise decisions and establish strong ties between the state and federal government. Let us use our current power to help our people,” he stated.
