KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is going to launch the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) on Tuesday (Aug 29), which will strengthen Malaysia’s commitment to achieve its net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions goals by 2050.
The NETR Phase 1 booklet, released by the Economy Ministry last month, outlined 10 influential projects and initiatives based on six energy transition levers. Phase 2 will focus on establishing the low-carbon pathway, national energy mix, emissions reduction targets, and the necessary factors for the energy transition.
Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli stated during the Phase 1 launch on July 27 that NETR could generate investment opportunities ranging from RM435 billion to RM1.85 trillion by 2050. The first phase alone is expected to create 23,000 high-impact jobs.
He also emphasized that the roadmap would not only benefit the environment but also the economy by opening up profitable ventures.
The NETR is a crucial step for Malaysia in accelerating its energy transition, especially in shifting from a traditional fossil fuel-based economy to a green economy with high-value products. – Bernama
