Poland’s railway network experienced a hacking attack, leading to disruptions in traffic overnight, according to a report by the state-run Polish Press Agency. The Internal Security Agency (ABW) and police are currently investigating the incident. The unauthorized use of the rail traffic management system resulted in hackers transmitting a signal through railway frequencies, causing trains in northwestern Poland to stop, resulting in delays. Stanisław Zaryn, the deputy coordinator of special services, emphasized the seriousness of any interference, especially considering recent attempts by Russia to destabilize Poland.
Zaryn stated, “Such attempts are being made by the Russian Federation in cooperation with Belarus, and also for this reason we do not underestimate any signals that come to the ABW.”
In a separate investigation, the state railway operator is looking into two train derailments and a collision involving two other trains on Thursday. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in these incidents.
Despite the incidents occurring on the same day, Zaryn mentioned that there is currently no evidence linking the hacking attack to the train incidents. The investigation is ongoing.
