JOHOR BARU: Police have busted a sundry shop in Masai here that was used as a storeroom for contraband alcohol.
Seri Alam OCPD Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak during a raid on Tuesday (Aug 20) said, police found 537 tins and bottles of contraband beer of various brands at the back of the shop.
“The 21-year-old shop assistant was arrested for possessing the alcohol, which was stored in 66 cartons and 20 boxes worth around RM50,000 inclusive of taxes.
“The sundry shop was used as a storage facility for the contraband alcohol,” he told a press conference at the Seri Alam police headquarters here on Thursday (Aug 22).
Supt Mohd Sohaimi said that efforts are ongoing to identify the shop owner to determine where the items were obtained from and for what purposes.
The suspect, who has no priors, was remanded for 12 days for investigation under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, he added.
The offence is punishable with a fine – where the amount could not be less than 10 times the seized amount or RM100,000 (whichever is higher) to not more than 20 times the seized amount or RM500,000 – or a jail term of six months to five years, or both if convicted.
