KUALA LUMPUR: An autopsy conducted on a man from the Kenyah tribe who died on his way to the Marudi district police headquarters in Sarawak revealed no evidence of criminal injuries. The man had complained of chest pains and breathing difficulties on Monday. The post-mortem, which also included a Covid-19 test, was carried out at Miri Hospital in Sarawak on Thursday (Aug 3), according to Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department director Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad.
In a statement on Thursday night, Azri revealed that the cause of death was intra-abdominal haemorrhage due to rupture of liver cirrhosis, a condition characterized by bleeding in the abdomen as a result of chronic liver disease. The death was classified as sudden death.
The investigation into the man’s death will continue by the Criminal Investigation Unit on Deaths in Custody, who will explore various angles before submitting the results to the coroner, Azri added.
It was reported on Wednesday that the 50-year-old detainee, who had been arrested for criminal intimidation, died en route to the police headquarters after experiencing chest pains and difficulty breathing. The man was confirmed dead at 10.30pm by a medical assistant at the Beluru health clinic in Marudi, according to Azri. – Bernama
