MUAR: A routine traffic stop along Jalan Salleh led to the discovery of more than 800 boxes of cigarettes without paid duty, police reported.

Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said officers from the Muar police traffic enforcement and investigation department stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation at around 3pm on Wednesday (Sept 25).

“Upon inspecting the vehicle, police seized a total of 830 boxes of cigarettes of various brands, believed to be smuggled without duty paid,” he said on Friday (Sept 27).

The 21-year-old local driver was arrested, and the vehicle, along with the cigarettes, a mobile phone, and cash, were confiscated. The seized items are valued at RM176,462.

ACP Raiz Mukhliz stated that the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. He urged anyone with information on smuggling activities to contact the authorities immediately.
