KUALA LUMPUR: Political parties should prioritise the welfare of the rakyat and avoid irresponsible actions in monitoring the implementation of government policies.

This was among the six resolutions addressing crucial areas including party affairs, politics, government, economy, education, and religion and culture passed at the 71st MCA annual general meeting here on Sunday (Oct 20).

The party also called on the national leadership to continue the reform agenda and formulate strategies in line with current developments, to face political challenges.

They should also avoid irresponsible actions and statements that could disrupt political stability, undermine foreign investor confidence, and hinder the country’s economic development efforts, it added.

In a statement issued following the AGM, the party said it fully supported the government’s efforts to combat corruption and promote integrity, and its commitment to implement two principles proposed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim: prohibiting family members of high officials from profiting from government projects and banning the direct award of government contracts without public tender.

Economically, the MCA urged the government to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and micro businesses and strive to create a business-friendly environment.

“Any reform plans must consider the survival of SMEs, and assist them to adapt with government transformation measures to achieve a win-win situation for the government, businesses, and the people,” it said.

In education, the meeting pressed for the completion of Chinese primary school projects and the maintenance of the Dual Language Programme.

It also urged the government to stop unnecessary interference and restrictions on fundraising activities for vernacular schools, to avoid limiting their development space, and to ensure the normal operation and healthy growth of these institutions.
