A politician’s son has been arrested by the police on suspicion of cheating, shortly after being released on bail by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Saturday (July 29).

The suspect is currently under investigation by the MACC for multiple cases of fraud. Additionally, the police are probing allegations that he claimed he could secure permanent resident status for his victims.

According to MACC sources, the 29-year-old is believed to be the mastermind behind a syndicate that impersonated MACC and Home Ministry senior officers, offering people a solution to their legal issues.

Kota Kinabalu OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Zaidi Abdullah stated that the suspect was apprehended due to an arrest warrant issued in 2021 for a cheating case. “In May 2021, a complainant alleged that they had been in contact with this suspect, who claimed to have connections in the Immigration Department and could expedite his wife’s application for MyPR. The suspect demanded multiple payments amounting to RM52,600 to be deposited into different bank accounts, promising that the necessary documents would be ready soon,” he explained.

However, the victim never received the promised documents and filed a report after losing contact with the suspect, prompting the police investigation. “We have obtained a four-day remand from the Magistrate’s Court to further investigate this case,” ACP Zaidi added.

On July 24, Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy announced that the suspect, along with six others, was being investigated for soliciting bribes under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. Five of the suspects were later released on MACC bail after providing their statements. Karunanithy appealed to anyone with information regarding this syndicate to step forward and cooperate with the MACC.
