In a recent address, Pope Francis expressed his concerns about the basic services in the city of Rome, calling for improvements before the start of the 2025 Holy Year. The Pope’s remarks were made during the year-end vespers of thanksgiving, known as the Te Deum, at the Vatican. The upcoming Holy Year is expected to attract millions of pilgrims to Rome.

During his homily at St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis asked if individuals are working to make the city a sign of hope for both residents and visitors. This statement was directed at Roberto Gualtieri, the mayor of Rome, who was seated in the front row and later shook hands with the Pope.

Pope Francis emphasized the need for Rome to become more accessible for the elderly and those with mobility issues. He pointed out that many neighborhoods have obstacles such as cars parked on sidewalks and blocked mobility ramps, making it difficult for wheelchair users and the elderly to navigate the city.

The Pope urged for “simple decorum and normal functionality” in the city, stating that a more liveable city would also be more welcoming for everyone. Rome hosts a Holy Year, also known as a Jubilee Year, every 25 years, attracting pilgrims who come to pray at various holy sites and receive special blessings.

However, the city’s existing issues, such as inefficient public transport, overflowing garbage bins, and traffic congestion, have been exacerbated by ongoing construction projects in preparation for the 2025 Holy Year. These projects include road underpasses and extensions to the subway system.

Francis added that the city needs to improve its basic services before the influx of pilgrims in 2025, stressing the importance of a more functional and welcoming city. His comments bring attention to the urgent need for infrastructure improvements to ensure a more accessible and enjoyable experience for residents and visitors alike.

It is evident that the Pope’s message serves as a call to action for city officials and residents to prioritize the necessary improvements before the start of the Holy Year in 2025. With the world’s attention turning to Rome for this significant event, the city has an opportunity to showcase its ability to provide a hospitable and accessible environment for all.

The urgency of addressing these deficiencies in public services and accessibility cannot be understated, as Rome strives to make a positive impression during the 2025 Holy Year. The Pope’s remarks highlight the significance of this upcoming event and the importance of ensuring that Rome is well-prepared to welcome millions of pilgrims.

With the guidance and influence of Pope Francis, the city of Rome has been presented with an opportunity to cultivate a more inclusive and accommodating environment, in line with the spirit of the Holy Year. It is now up to city officials and residents to work towards enacting the necessary changes to achieve this vision.

Overall, Pope Francis’ address serves as a reminder of the profound impact that the 2025 Holy Year will have on Rome and emphasizes the need for concerted efforts to improve the city’s basic services and accessibility in preparation for this significant event.
