Theseira, who represents the Portuguese Settlement’s preservation and promotion of the heritage, arts and culture advisory panel, highlighted the significance of keeping the language and culture alive for the community’s well-being and for persuading the state government to preserve their land.
He further mentioned that the community leaders are attempting to meet Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh to discuss a new 99-year lease for the Settlement by imposing a minimal fee for the renewal process in order to safeguard their heritage.
According to Theseira, the preservation of the Portuguese Settlement’s heritage is essential for maintaining a sense of identity and building a successful future. Additionally, he mentioned that the community is ready to usher in Christmas with colourful lights and an illuminated Christmas tree.
He also stated that the community prioritizes observing health protocols due to rising Covid-19 cases while celebrating the Yuletide, and will uphold its “muhhibah” spirit by welcoming locals from various races to experience the ambience of Christmas at the Settlement. Theseira stressed the importance of fostering relationships and connecting with each other during this festive season, encouraging everyone to feel welcome and appreciate the heritage of the community.
