President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi of Egypt stated on Sunday that Egypt will not permit any threat to Somalia or its security, as reported by a statement from the presidency. This statement was made after Ethiopia indicated that it would consider recognizing an independence claim by Somaliland.
During a news conference with Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Cairo, Sisi remarked that attempting to assert control over a piece of land is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by anyone.
On Jan. 1, Ethiopia signed a memorandum of understanding in which it expressed willingness to recognize Somaliland’s independence in exchange for access to the Red Sea. Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991, but it has not received recognition from any country.
