PARIS: Jordan Mechner, the video game creator, has fulfilled his childhood dreams through his creation, The Prince Of Persia, which has allowed him to make video games and movies. With the upcoming release of The Lost Crown, the medieval hero is set to make a new appearance, reviving a 30-year-old franchise that has sold more than 20 million copies. This new action-adventure is inspired by the One Thousand And One Nights folktales and will be released by French video game maker Ubisoft on Thursday.

The process of creating the game has evolved significantly since its beginnings in the 1980s. Mechner, who is now 59 years old and has been living in Montpellier since 2015, used to film movements for the game using a VHS camera and then uploaded them image by image to a computer using the rotoscoping technique. His father also contributed to the game by composing its music. The game was released in 1989 and was lauded for its advanced animation and fluid movements, establishing Mechner’s reputation as a game creator.

Prince Of Persia became a cult saga with each new technological advancement, and was eventually acquired by Ubisoft in 2000. The game was even turned into a successful Disney movie in 2010, which Mechner had never imagined would happen.

Aside from his work on video games, Mechner is also working on graphic novels, with one of his works, Replay: Memoires D’une Famille already published in French and set to be released in English in March by Macmillan’s First Second Books. This graphic novel shares the story of his Austrian Jewish refugee relatives who made it to the United States just before World War II.

It tells a fascinating story of his great uncle Joji, who managed to secure an exit visa to France by showing two watercolours painted by Adolf Hitler. Mechner’s great uncle had bought the watercolours years earlier and stumbled upon them while cleaning out a cellar.

With the upcoming release of The Lost Crown, Mechner’s legacy as a video game creator continues to live on, along with his work in graphic novels where he shares his family’s extraordinary stories.

It’s clear that Mechner is proud of the impact he has made in the gaming and storytelling world, establishing a legacy that continues to inspire others. He has truly fulfilled his childhood dreams through his work on The Prince Of Persia.
