IPOH: Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) chairman Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj and three others have been taken into custody by the police during an operation to remove farmers from land in Kanthan, near Tambun.
Party secretary-general A. Sivarajan stated that the farmers in the area were engaged in a standoff with enforcement officers from the Land and Mines Office on Tuesday (Oct 24).
Sivarajan claimed that during the commotion, an officer pushed activist Chong Yee Shan, causing her to fall and break some teeth.

On Oct 19, The Star reported that over 130 farmers in Kanthan were concerned about their livelihoods after being instructed to vacate their farms.
They had submitted a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at his Tambun parliamentary service center in Meru.
According to farmer Liew Wong, 57, he received an eviction notice from the Kinta district land office on Oct 13.

He claimed that there was no prior warning or meeting with any representative of the authorities.
The notice simply stated that he had seven days to vacate the land as he was illegally working on it, he added.
The police are expected to issue a statement on the incident later today.
