The government will continue to invest heavily in improving the public bus system to address first- and last-mile connectivity issues. According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, this includes the possibility of adding more bus lanes in cities to ensure punctuality along routes. Loke acknowledged that bus usage is not popular due to the lack of reliability in terms of timing, as buses often get stuck in traffic with private vehicles. Adding more bus lanes is seen as a key solution to this problem.

While there may be some initial opposition to the reduction of usable lanes, Loke believes the public will eventually support the move as the bus system transportation improves. He emphasized that investing in the public bus system is necessary as it is not possible to connect everything by rail. Plans are underway to introduce more bus lanes in Kuala Lumpur.

In addition to bus lanes, the ministry will also focus on upgrading infrastructure such as bus stops to address other root causes of public reluctance. It was recently announced that existing bus stop poles in the Klang Valley will be upgraded to covered bus stands at 356 locations, with an allocation of RM35.6mil provided to seven local councils through the Local Government Development Ministry. This decision aims to make the service more cost-efficient, convenient, and safe for the public.

Loke also highlighted the lack of walkways and sidewalks near bus stops and train stations. He stressed that resolving this issue would require a cross-ministry approach. The Cabinet Committee to tackle public transport issues was set up in April to address this concern. This committee plays a vital role in the government’s efforts to increase integration between ministries in city planning and the development of a sustainable transportation system.
