Pakatan Harapan is concerned about the low voter turnout in the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections, according to Anthony Loke, the DAP secretary-general. He stated that the party’s main challenge is to convince voters to participate in the voting process. Loke mentioned that the exact percentage of outstation voters is unknown but acknowledged that the numbers are significant. Many individuals from Johor work in other regions such as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The party’s objective is to identify outstation voters and encourage them to return home to cast their votes.
On Friday night (Sept 1), Loke expressed his concerns to the media after a Pakatan Harapan ceramah at Wisma DAP Muar. He emphasized that low voter turnout has negative implications for the legitimacy of the democratic system. He stressed the importance of electing representatives who truly represent the majority of the people in the area. A low voter turnout can potentially undermine the credibility and legitimacy of the winning candidate.
During the ceramah, various speakers urged attendees to reach out to their families and friends and motivate them to return home for voting. Bakri MP Tan Hong Pin highlighted the issue of voters being unaware of their voting status. He shared an incident where a person thought she was a Bakri voter but was actually entitled to vote in Simpang Jeram. This incident highlights the need for greater awareness about the ongoing election among potential voters.
Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) president, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, also spoke at the ceramah. Efforts to increase voter turnout and ensure a fair election were emphasized throughout the event.
