Police have opened two investigation papers on the fourth day of campaigning for the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state seat by-elections in Johor Baru. The Johor police by-election spokesman, Supt Ibrahim Mat Som, also announced that 22 permits for campaign events and ceramah were approved on Tuesday, August 29. The two investigations are related to Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which deals with making statements with intent to cause fear or alarm to the public, and Section 427 of the Penal Code, which deals with committing mischief.
In addition to the investigations, two ceramah permits and 13 campaign permits were approved for Pulai, while five ceramah permits and two campaign permits were approved for Simpang Jeram. Supt Ibrahim Mat Som reminded political parties and their supporters to conduct a healthy campaign without provoking any form of public distress. He also emphasized that politicians should not violate Section 24B(3) of the Election Offences Act 1954, which pertains to campaigning without a permit, and should avoid discussing the 3Rs (race, religion, and royalty) throughout the campaign period. Any violators will face stern action.
