The Communications and Digital Ministry has taken action against British band The 1975, blacklisting them from performing in Malaysia. The decision comes after the band’s performance at the Good Vibes Festival in Sepang on Friday (July 21). The ministry announced through the central committee for the application for filming and performance by foreign artistes (Puspal) that the band’s behavior challenged, belittled, and violated local laws, as well as the morals of Malaysians. Puspal stated, “The Communications and Digital Ministry will not tolerate any party that provokes and engages in disrespectful behavior while performing in Malaysia.”
In addition to blacklisting the band, the ministry has filed a police report against both the band and the festival organizers for their negligence and failure to comply with the conditions set by Puspal. The organizers had assured Puspal that they would take full responsibility for the band’s performance.
During their performance, The 1975’s vocalist, Matty Healy, was seen holding a bottle of alcohol on stage and behaving obscenely while criticizing Malaysia’s laws regarding the LGBT community.
This firm action by the Communications and Digital Ministry sends a message that disrespectful behavior and violation of local laws will not be tolerated, particularly from foreign artistes. It serves as a reminder that all performers must adhere to the rules and regulations set by the authorities.
