JAKARTA (Reuters) – The geophysics agency (BMKG) of Indonesia reported that a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Timor island on Thursday. According to the agency, there is no potential for a tsunami. The epicenter of the quake was located on land, approximately 75 kilometers (46.6 miles) beneath the surface. The tremors were felt in Kupang, a city in the western side of Timor island within the East Nusa Tenggara province. Christa Elim, a resident of Kupang, stated that she and her husband felt strong tremors and had to quickly leave their shophouse. Elim compared the sensation to being shoved off a chair.

Fortunately, no damage or casualties were reported in the affected areas, including Kupang, as confirmed by the local search and rescue agency. Initially, BMKG stated that the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.2.

Indonesia is situated along the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” which is a highly seismic zone. This region is where different tectonic plates of the Earth’s crust converge, resulting in a significant number of earthquakes and volcanic activity.

The earthquake in Timor island reached a magnitude of 6.1, as stated by the geophysics agency of Indonesia (BMKG). BMKG also clarified that there is no risk of a tsunami following the quake. According to their data, the epicenter of the earthquake was on land, about 75 kilometers (46.6 miles) below the surface. The tremors were experienced in Kupang, a city on the western side of Timor island, situated in the East Nusa Tenggara province. One resident, Christa Elim, described feeling the strong tremors twice, likening it to being forcefully pushed off a chair.

Due to its location, Indonesia is situated in a highly active seismic zone known as the “Pacific Ring of Fire.” This area experiences frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity as different tectonic plates meet and interact.

Reuters reported that the geophysics agency of Indonesia (BMKG) confirmed a 6.1-magnitude earthquake occurring on Timor island. The agency also stated that there is no danger of a tsunami following the seismic event. The earthquake’s epicenter was recorded on land, approximately 75 kilometers (46.6 miles) beneath the surface. Residents of Kupang, a city located on the western part of Timor island, within the East Nusa Tenggara province, experienced the tremors. One witness, Christa Elim, recounted the strong tremors she encountered, describing them as feeling forcibly thrown off a chair.
