In Lahad Datu, Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah cooked four dishes for the people. The dishes included ikan bilis masak kicap, ikan bilis masak asam, udang berlada, and bubur lambuk. Tunku Azizah showcased her culinary expertise during the Santapan Bersama Rakyat event at the Dewan Perdana grounds. Many residents gathered to witness her cooking skills.
There was an abundance of anchovies, so Tunku Azizah decided to make dishes using them – ikan bilis masak kicap and ikan bilis masak asam. She sliced garlic, onion, and red chillies while explaining her choice of dishes.
The preparation of the dishes was done with the help of the staff of Istana Negara and members of the Association of Wives of Civil Servants and Women Civil Servants (Puspanita). Tunku Azizah also supervised the making of bubur lambuk, and added the necessary spices to it.
According to Lahad Datu Puspanita deputy chairman Mahasitah Amin, the opportunity to assist the Queen in preparing meals does not come often and is considered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Puspanita members were excited and made preparations in advance. They ensured all the materials were ready for Her Majesty.
The members of Puspanita also cooked other dishes such as kam heong chicken, kerabu peria, and kari ikan mamak for the event. They even went out of their way to find daun lamiding, a native vegetable, which is a popular choice for flavoring the bubur lambuk.
An attendee named Ain Balkisyah Mat expressed her honor and amazement at seeing Tunku Azizah’s cooking skills firsthand. She mentioned that she had heard about the Queen’s cooking hobby and her expertise with kitchen tools. Fadhil Seli, another resident, was grateful for the opportunity to taste meals prepared by Her Majesty, particularly his favorite dish, udang berlada.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Tunku Azizah are currently on their “Kembara Kenali Borneo” journey. They, along with their children, are traveling across the Pan Borneo Highway, which connects Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei. Their journey started in Tawau and will end in Telok Melano, Kuching, on September 13.
