Scammers are constantly evolving their tactics to deceive unsuspecting victims, and a new claim has emerged online stating that they now pose as telecommunication company personnel. They contact people and offer phone bill discounts.
Is there any truth to these claims? Let’s find out.
VERDICT:
TRUE
The Cyber Crime Alert Royal Malaysia Police Facebook page has confirmed this claim and warns the public to exercise caution while receiving calls from individuals who claim to be from the telecommunication company’s call centre.
The police explain that scammers will offer a three-month bill waiver if the person on the call provides a six-digit code sent while they are on the phone.
To identify whether a call is a scam, the police offer several indicators. Firstly, telecommunication companies do not reach out to customers late at night regarding such offers. Additionally, they do not use WhatsApp for customer communication, and the language proficiency may be disappointing.
The police emphasize that individuals should not disclose any security codes sent to them as doing so would essentially invite criminals. They urge people to be cautious and contact 997 if they suspect they have been cheated.
