It is common for disused mining pools to be used as recreational spots for young people, but despite their peaceful appearance, they can be very dangerous.
One of the main hazards of mining pools is their depth, as they are essentially shafts dug into the ground.
Unlike naturally-occurring ponds or lakes, they do not have gentle sloping banks, instead often having sheer sides that make it difficult for anyone in trouble to climb out.
Tragically, there have been many incidents involving children swimming in these abandoned pools.
Recently, a 15-year-old boy in Bandar Saujana Putra became the latest victim of such a tragedy.

According to a statement by Kuala Langat OCPD Supt Ahmad Ridhwan Mohd Nor on Thursday (Dec 14), a 29-year-old takaful agent reported the drowning incident to the authorities on that day.
He stated that the 15-year-old victim drowned while swimming with friends.
“The complainant and his friend, who was fishing nearby, heard shouts for help and called 999,” said Supt Ahmad Ridhwan on Friday (Dec 15).
He further explained that police, with the assistance of the Fire and Rescue Department, conducted a search for the victim at the scene and found his body.
“A medical team from Hospital Banting confirmed he had died at the scene,” he added, and the incident has been classified as sudden death.
Supt Ahmad Ridhwan urged parents and guardians to keep constant tabs on their children’s whereabouts and activities to avoid such unfortunate incidents.
